Introducing the RLDSts Podcast!

Katie and I try to schedule a google hangout every week to catch up and talk stitching. I’m not sure why it took us so long to figure out that we should make at least a portion of it live, but alas. After about a year we got there!

In this video we talk about our upcoming Labor Day design that will be out in the next couple weeks, and share our WIPs, including patterns from:

So what do you think?! Is this something you would watch every once in a while?

Here’s to the Red White and Blue Tote!

I love celebrating holidays with festive, holiday-themed outfits and accessories. I have Christmas sweaters, Valentine’s Day headbands and St. Patrick’s Day t-shirts, but I didn’t have anything special for Independence Day.

So after we finished the Here’s to the Red White and Blue Stitch-Along, I sewed my finished piece on a tote!

RedWhiteAndBlueTote1

I got this blank tote from Joann’s for about $4, and used a bit of coordinating floral fabric I’ve had in my stash for years. I ironed  Heat’n’Bond on the back of my piece and then ironed it on to the floral fabric. I back-stitched around the edge in a zig-zag pattern, and then blanket-stitched the whole she-bang to the front of the tote.

RedWhiteAndBlueTote2

I love the way it turned out! The tote is the perfect size (thanks to Allyson for suggested I go with ‘Medium’ instead of ‘Large’), and I love the play of the floral fabric against the flag. With all the patriotic holidays coming up, it’ll get a ton of use!

Finish those stripes!

Last part! I’m sure you’re a fill stitch expert by now, right?

Part 3: Friday, June 13th: Directions 5 & 6

Finish up your patriotic piece with that last stripe – filled with Long & Short stitch – and then outline the stars. All done and ready for Independence Day!

Don’t forget to post your finished piece in our flickr group or in our RLDSts Facebook SAL group by Independence Day on July 4th, so you’ll be entered to win a 2014 All-Inclusive Subscription to Red Letter Day Stitches.

A few stars and a stripe started us off, now on to the next part!

More stripes!

Today we continue stitching those stripes on Here’s to the Red White and Blue:

Part 2: Tuesday, June 10th: Directions 3 & 4
Part 3: Friday, June 13th: Directions 5 & 6

First up, there’s the pesky French Knot stripe! If you need practice on your French Knots, this is the perfect piece. Start by spacing them far apart, and then as you get more proficient, go back and fill in! Then practice your Lattice Stitch for our largest stripe. I love this one - it’s a unique fill stitch that creates a fun pattern.

Here’s to the Red White and Blue Stitch-Along: Part 1

Let’s get patriotic and stitch up Here’s to the Red White and Blue!

Part 1 - Stars and Stripe.

Part 1 – Stars and Stripe.

In the first part of the stitch-along, we’ll knock out the blue stars and stitch the first stripe! This pattern will give us a great workout on our fill stitches, and we start with some satin stitch. A little tip – if you’re not getting the full, filled look we’re going for, don’t be shy about doubling back over the areas you’ve already worked!
